RCA and HQO release new rehab guidelines
Date: December 5, 2019
The release of two new rehab guidelines for bilateral TJR and shoulder arthroplasty will support the rollout of bundled care across the province.
The guidelines were developed in collaboration with Health Quality Ontario (HQO) and provide guidance on best practices in rehabilitative care across the continuum of care.
- Simultaneous Bilateral Knee and Hip Replacement: The best practice recommendations address pre-operative care and bedded, ambulatory and in-home rehabilitation. They are included in an updated RCA Best Practices Framework for Patients with Hip & Knee Replacement.
- Shoulder Arthroplasty: The best practice recommendations address rehab at various stages of recovery and are included in Rehabilitative Care Best Practices Guidance for Patients post Shoulder Arthroplasty.
The recommendations are based on a review of clinical evidence and data analysis of current practices. They also reflect consensus among a group of subject matter experts, including surgeons and rehab care professionals from organizations across Ontario that perform high numbers of these procedures.
The RCA and HQO hosted webinars to introduce the guidelines and discuss what to consider when implementing them. The webinars are available here. The RCA will also be updating existing TJR quick reference tools and self-assessment guides to include bilateral procedures.
