In the coming months, the RCA will begin work to clarify and strengthen the role of rehabilitation in Ontario’s emergency departments (EDs). Building upon a recently-published paper, the initiative will start with a review of the literature and existing guidelines on how rehab professionals can contribute to improved patient flow, reduced admissions, and better experiences for patients and providers.

Findings from this review phase will inform the development of a guidance document for hospitals and system partners, highlighting opportunities to more fully integrate rehabilitation into ED care. By engaging subject matter experts and drawing on both evidence and practice, the RCA aims to provide direction on how rehabilitative care can add value in emergency settings.
