The RCA has begun work to develop a Rehab in Acute Care Framework to support a shared understanding of the role of rehabilitation within acute care settings and promote consistency in practice across Ontario.

Pressures on patient flow remain a key focus across the health care system, and rehabilitation professionals play an important role in supporting assessment, discharge planning, functional recovery, and transitions in care. The framework will establish a baseline understanding of rehabilitation in acute care and outline standards to support best practices and future capacity planning.

Work is currently in its early stages, with a literature review underway to identify evidence and leading practices related to rehabilitation services in acute care settings. Findings from this review will inform the development of a draft framework.

As this work progresses, the RCA plans to convene a working group to provide feedback on the draft framework and help ensure it reflects the needs and experiences of rehabilitation providers across the province.
