The RCA has released updated rehabilitative care best practice recommendations for patients with hip fracture. The recommendations are contained in an addendum which is to be used in conjunction with Rehabilitative Care for Older Adults Living With/At Risk of Frailty: From Frailty to Resilience.

The RCA’s original rehabilitative care best practices framework for patients with hip fracture was developed in 2017 to support implementation of Ontario’s quality-based procedures. In 2021, the RCA and Provincial Geriatric Leadership Ontario (PGLO) expanded on this work with Rehabilitative Care for Older Adults Living With/At Risk of Frailty: From Frailty to Resilience, a framework which outlines best practices and the required components of rehabilitative care for older adults living with frailty, including older adults who have sustained a hip fracture.

The new hip fracture addendum and the frailty framework reflect the latest evidence. Together, they replace the RCA’s 2017 framework, Rehabilitative Care Best Practice Framework for Patients with Hip Fracture. Both documents should be consulted when providing best practice rehabilitative care to older adults who have sustained a hip fracture.

Rehabilitation plays a significant role in the recovery of patients with hip fracture by improving functional recovery, supporting early post-operative mobility and contributing to secondary prevention through improved strength and balance.
